Laurence K. Marshall and Family
Marshall was one of the founders of Raytheon and its CEO during WWII. He was creative, perhaps visionary, and unquestionably very well connected and extremely rich. In 1950, he retired and decided to take his children (particularly his 17 year old son John) on a safari to South Africa in search of a lost city (well, maybe they were following the obsession of a Capetown Surgeon... or maybe just to find the Bushmen). They had some naive ideas: Mom (Loma) would do anthropology. Son (John) would make a film, and daughter (Elizabeth) write a book. What a crazy idea, especially since they had no training. |
