Fous, released in 1955 was extraordinarily controversial.
Hated by almost everyone, it became one of the most
influential ethnographic films of all time.
Rouch went on to play a critical role in the development
of cinema varité: the use of
non-actors in unrehearsed situations with non-scripted dialogue.
Maītres Fous was radical in
its critique of colonialism, incorporation of Africans into the
film-making process and emphasis on showing culture in the process of
change rather than free from outside influences.
