Little film in Russia before the Communist Revolution (and undistinguished).

After 1917 revolution, Lenin saw film as most influential art.

This led to an age of experimentation, much of which concerned how shots are joined together.

This made a virtue of a necessity: poverty, blockades, and war made film stock rare: no long pieces of film available.
