Griffith's Later Life
Griffith,
wounded by criticism of BoaN, makes Intolerance (it's OK for him to
advocate the censoring of an entire race but not OK for anyone to censor
him). It's a financial flop (though modern critics like it).
Griffith makes other outstanding movies (Broken Blossoms,
1919 and Way Down East, 1920 are the most famous)
However, Griffith never really recovers financially from
Intolerance and never moves into the 20th century intellectually. He
makes his last film in 1931 and dies alone and disillusioned in 1948.
