Chaplin: The Tramp
Chaplin's
Little Tramp character appears fully developed in "The Tramp" written and
directed by Chaplin in 1915.
The Little Tramp is already a complex character, honest,
but not too, competent but bumbling, poor but with aristocratic
mannerisms.
Most of the actors in The Tramp had long careers in the
movies in general and with Chaplin in particular. Of note is Edna
Purviance, the female lead. She plays across from Chaplin in more
than 20 films and worked for him from 1915 until her death in 1958.
