Birth of a Nation

For better and worse, Birth of a Nation is Griffith's finest work and a landmark of American cinema.

Huge: 12,500 feet, 165 minutes long, over 13,000 individual shots.

One of the most widely seen and profitable films of all time, it makes use of the new camera techniques and scene cross-cutting.

Deeply offensively and profoundly racist,  BoaN tells the story of how the KKK saved America.  It was certainly responsible for the revival of the KKK in 1915 and shaped US attitudes toward race and history for at least one, and maybe several generations.
