Course Overview:

MUSP ####J is for the student who wishes to further their musical training on the tuba. All entering freshman music majors should be able to perform on the tuba at a level that indicates previous study and experience.  Music majors should own a metronome, tuner and mouthpiece. Music majors should also strive to own their own instrument by the end of the first year of study.

Requirements and policies for this course are as follows:
1.  Attend an applied music lesson each week.
2.  Perform on a minimum of two (2) area recitals.
3.  Perform a scale exam.
4.  Perform a pre-jury.
5.  Perform a final exam (jury) with piano accompaniment at the end of each semester.

Instruction periods last 25 minutes (1 hour credit), or 50 minutes (2 hour credit). A student who cannot come for a scheduled lesson is required to notify the teacher at least 24 hours in advance of their lesson; otherwise, except for illness immediately prior to a lesson, the student will forfeit the right to a make-up lesson. Students absent without an excuse from more than three (3) lessons in any, one applied music course during a semester will be failed in that subject. Lessons missed by the teacher will be made up at the mutual convenience of the student and the teacher. Students are responsible for the fees of their piano accompanists.

Grading Policy:

All students receiving music scholarships must perform with university performing organizations and enroll for private music lessons in their performance area. A grade point average of 3.0 in music classes and a 3.0 GPA in other classes must be maintained to renew a scholarship.

Because of the value chamber music has in one's music education and career, all those enrolled in private study will be required to enroll and perform in the Texas State Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble a minimum of eight (8) semesters.
