In this seminar we will consider several meanings of the term "community" and several theoretical approaches used in the study and development of community.   We will also explore the relationship between technology and community and ask why community matters in the first place.  Some specific topics to be covered include social capital, civic engagement, ethnonationalism, urbanization, globalization, virtual communities, and emerging communities of interest.
