Examine each of the five sentences below. Using the elementary
principles of composition (Chapter 2, Strunk and White), specify principles
that could be used to improve the sentence. Using the insights from the
principles, rewirte three sentences.
1. Carr and Halvorsen (2001, p. 108-9) offer four positive outcomes
to active citizen involvement in their article on incorporating
community-oriented approaches to citizen participation.
2. While there are many different classifications for institutions of
higher education, most are typically classified as research institutions,
comprehensive universities or community colleges.
3. The wording in the Rodriguez
decision made the issue of adequacy not only a local control issue, but also
one that has various interpretations.
4. The federal government has moved most of the responsibilities to
the states and thus they are no longer the trendsetters so that the roles of
states are to play enforcer of the rules and requirements of welfare reform.
5. In 1981 Kweit and Kweit (p. 31) stated that there had been no
development of consensus on what citizen participation is among researchers and
political theorist.
