A federal court has ruled that the Army Corps (core) of Engineers failed to maintain the shipping channel that links New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico, and that failure contributed to the catastrophc flooding during Hurricane Katrina four years ago. The ruling states that the Corpos had an opportunity to take action to alleviate the channel's deterioration but failed to do so. Six plaintiffs are suing the Corps. Five of them benefitted from yesterday's ruling and will receive damages ranging from 100-thousand dollars to 317-thousand dollars. |

The auto club -- Triple A -- predicts more people will be on the road this year, compared to last. One reason is a boost in consumer confidence compared to a year ago. Triple A says most of the traveling will be on the road, rather than in the air. Motorists will find gasoline costs more this year -- up an average 50 cents a gallon over last year. Car travel is expected to go up two-point-one percent over last Thanksgiving. Triple-A's study looked at people who say they will be traveling 50 miles or more. The average mileage roundtrip this year is 815 miles. |

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the San Antonio Spurs last night. The game went into overtime after Dirk Nowitzki tipped in a basket at the buzzer to end regulation play. The Mavericks looked pretty sluggish for three quarters, but somehow managed to stay in contention. Nowitzki led the way, scoring 41 points for the Mavs with 11 of them coming in overtime. The Spurs' Tim Duncan had 22 points and 14 rebounds. The Spurs were without starting guard Tony Parker, who aggravated a sprained left ankle in Saturday night's loss to Oklahoma City. The final score was 99 to 94 -- Mavs. |
