FORMATTING LOCAL STORIES
--------------------------------------------------------------
Turn on the computer. A screen will appear and you will type the following.
Name: tvnews
Password: mc3312.
Hit Return or Click on Log In.
Minimize the News23 box.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Open a web browser (Safari or Firefox).
Open Bobcat Mail or your favorite e-mail program.
New Message/Compose
Mailto: m_t_england.bobcatupdate@blogger.com
Subject: Your Name
Write your text using no slug. Single space your copy.
For packages, put SB (for sound bite) on a line by itself.
Send the copy and wait for my review.
After I finish reviewing the copy and graded it, I'll repost it on the
blogger.
--------------------------------------------------------------
On your browser, go to the Bobcat Update page.
Click on Reporter Notebook (in the right column)
The new web pages that opens (a blog) will have your revised copy.
Mark or highlight the script and copy it (Apple C)
Click on W (found on the bottom tool bar of the computer screen)
Click on File, then "New Blank Document"
Paste your script (Apple V)
Save as Plain Text on the Desktop using the assigned Slug
Print a copy of the nonformatted copy for yourself.
If you're writing a VO, then format the copy IMMEDIATELY with ROLL VO,
etc.
If you're writing a PKG, hold onto your copy until your next lab session
and follow the PKG formatting procedures.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Highlight or mark the text. Either hold down the Apple button and hit A,
OR click on EDIT -> SELECT ALL, OR use the mouse to place the
cursor in the upper left corner of the story and hold down left button
of mouse and drag to highlight the story.
EDIT -> COPY or Hold down the Apple button and hit C.
--------------------------------------------------------------
On the desktop, look for the icon BUpdateScript.dot. Click on it.
Move cursor to right column just below the word NARRATION and click once.
EDIT -> PASTE
Use mouse to highlight script or Hold down the Apple button and hit A.
Change font size to 18.
Double click on the words Bobcat Update or Go to the menu item VIEW
-> HEADER AND FOOTER
(This action activates the upper portion
of the script template and allows you to change it.)
Use mouse to move cursor to right side of SLUG:
Type slug/title -- make it consistent with the name used before.
Use mouse to insert name of reporter and photographer.
Click CLOSE on toolbar.
Page Down to make sure entire script is in the right column. If not,
place cursor on the top part of the script in the left column and hit:
INSERT -> BREAK -> COLUMN BREAK (2 times).
-------------------------------------------------------------
If video cues are needed (e.g. ROLL ENG or character generator
information), use mouse to put cursor in left column, hit return until
you find the appropriate spot for the video cue to match script.
VOs = ROLL ENG
PACKAGES = PKG-# (example: PKG-4011)
CGs = NAME AND TITLE
(Be sure to prepare PINK SHEETS for the Names and Titles you
want to have character generated.)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Separate lead-ins (a.k.a. tosses) from packages, and narration
from sound bites with a line like this:
-------------------------
Save a copy of the formatted version:
FILE -> SAVE AS
Name the story with the same slug used for the teleprompter version but use the suffix .DOC
Format: Microsoft Word .docx
Where: Desktop
-> click SAVE -> YES
-------------------------------------------------
Print four copies of the script.
FILE -> PRINT
COPIES 4
-------------------------------------------------
Now close Microsoft Word or at least minimize the application.
Your two stories -- the teleprompter version .txt and the formatted version .doc -- should appear on the desktop.
Double click the icon for News 23, which will open up the network. You will see two folders ".txt for prompter" and ".docx for print". Drag your .txt file from the desktop to the News 23 folder ".txt for prompter" and your .docx file into the ".doc for print" folder.
Inform the producer that you have finished writing your stories.
--------------------------------------------------------------
When finished, close all of the applications you were using but do not log off the computer or shut it down.
