Complete courses of study are offered in the fields of music performance and music education. String majors are engaged in a variety of stimulating course work such as: Orchestra Methods, String Techniques, String Orchestra Literature and Current Trends in Music Education. In addition to studies in orchestral performance, string majors participate in chamber music. String trios, quartets, quintets and other ensembles (which include winds and piano) schedule performances on and off campus for a variety of occasions.
String pedagogy and teacher education are a vital part of the Texas State Music Education program. String Education at Texas State is on the cutting edge of current pedagogy, using the best and most proven materials and sources. String Education majors study with a nationally recognized faculty who bring the most contemporary methods and trends in the area of public school string education. Students enjoy a learning atmosphere that is both supportive and demanding. Student teachers are placed for their internships in a variety of schools in the Austin and San Antonio areas. Texas State string majors become excellent musicians and performers, while acquiring the skills and techniques to become the kind of role models that young string students deserve.
Scholarships and specific performance awards are available to string and wind players, and percussionists who demonstrate excellence in orchestral performance. Scholarships can be renewed on an annual basis by students who have shown sufficient musical progress and academic achievement. Scholarship auditions are set every year from November through April. The deadline for submitting scholarship materials, including letters of recommendation, is December 1 for the university, and April 20, for the School of Music.
