The Texas State Symphony Orchestra has come of age. Founded in the 1950's by Professor Anton Bek, the orchestral program has developed to a level that rivals programs throughout the country. Professors Jack Laumer and John Stansberry contributed to the re-emergence of the orchestral program in the late 70's and early 80's. Professor Howard Hudiburg began building the current program in 1985.

With an emphasis on excellence in the performance of the standard orchestral repertoire, the orchestral studies and string education and performance programs at Texas State present a quality educational experience for the students in the School of Music. The TSSO has performed at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention and the American String Teachers Convention in 1993, and was the featured university orchestra for the TMEA Convention in 2005. The Symphony Orchestra and String Orchestra have toured in Europe, performing in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. They have performed in Scotland and England touring with the Scottish folk band, The Wherries. The symphony has performed and recorded with Michael Martin Murphey, and has performed under the direction of Lucas Foss. The Texas State Chamber Orchestra performed at the White House in Washington D.C. in December of 2008 and performed in Italy as part of the 2009 American Celebration of Music in Italy.  In addition to performances across the state, the orchestras perform 6-8 concerts each school year, highlighting standard repertoire from the Baroque to the Twentieth Century.

The Texas State Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and String Orchestra are becoming well known throughout the state and nation as ensembles of the highest caliber. Non-music major string players are encouraged to perform with the Texas State Orchestras and take private lessons from the School of Music string faculty. Our program is open by audition to all Texas State University students. Every musician in the orchestral area makes a valuable contribution to the university, and to the community of San Marcos. The symphony orchestra is highly valued as orchestral performances touch thousands of lives every year. Additionally, orchestra students are involved in productions with the opera area, and the theatre and dance departments. The School of Music's finest soloists are featured with the orchestra as winners of the Student Concerto and Aria Competitions.
