The Jessie Helen Haag Endowed Scholarship in School Health Education

Dr. Jessie Haag was an internationally acclaimed author and scholar of school health education.Ê She began her teaching career at the University of Texas at Austin in 1950 after serving in various health education roles in the state of Pennsylvania.Ê In recognition of her pioneering work in school health throughout Texas and the nation, Dr. Haag received numerous professional awards.Ê She retired from college teaching in 1977 after 27 years at UT-Austin.Ê Dr. Haag honored the School Health Education Program at SWT during her lifetime through donations from her professional library and through her estate planning.ÊÊAt the time of her death in 1988, SWT received her entire library and an endowment with assets totaling $500,000 to be used to establish the Haag School Health Education Scholarship Endowed Fund.

Offering All-Level Health Education Teacher Certification
Award Stipends
- All tuition costs
- All university fees
- Required textbooks
- Waiver of non-resident tuition and fees
- Maximum award - three years
Award Requirements
For qualified female students only who:
- Major or minor in school health education.
- Have junior or senior status (completed 60 or more semester hours).
- Complete at least one 3-hour health education course each semester except during student teaching.
- Are not receiving athletic scholarships or grants.
- Have a 2.75 cumulative GPA when making application.
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA or better each academic year thereafter.
Application Procedures
- Apply for SWT admission if attending elsewhere.
- Send official transcripts of all college study completed.
- Complete the scholarship application.
- Have three persons who are familiar with the quality of your academic work and who are not members of the SWT health education faculty, send a completed recommendation form in support of your application.
- Submit a one-page typewritten essay stating the following:
(1). Why school health education is a career of interest to you.
(2). Indicate your interest in teaching health education in Texas secondary schools.

Graduate Scholarships in School Health Education
Master of Arts (with thesis - 30 semester hours)
Master of Education (without thesis - 36 semester hours)
The graduate program provides continued intellectual growth in a stimulating learning environment and develops professional leaders in health education.
Award Stipends

- Waiver of non-resident tuition and fees
- Maximum award - three years
Award Requirements
For female students only who have bachelor's degrees and who have a 3.0 GPA in their last 60 undergraduate hours, and who:
- major in school health education (21 hours).
- maintain a 3.25 GPA yearly while a scholarship recipient.
- complete at least one 3-hour health education course each semester.
Scholarship Application Procedures
- Apply for admission to the School of Graduate Studies and Research.
- Submit official transcripts of all previous academic study.
- Complete the scholarship application.
- Have three persons, other than SWT health education faculty, submit a completed recommendation form in support of your application. One recommendation form must be from a principal or supervisor.
- Submit a one-page typewritten essay stating the following:
(1). Why school health education is a career of interest for you.
(2). Your present teaching responsibilities in school health and your future plans for teaching.
(3). How graduate study in health education at SWT will advance your personal goals and your expectation for professionalÊdevelopment as a health teacher.
