Karen L. Johnston

Karen L. Johnston, Professor Emerita of physics at North Carolina State University believes that teaching is the most honorable profession. She has served as President (1995) of the American Association of Physics Teachers and remains dedicated to efforts that bring physicists together in supporting physics education for all. Educated at Sam Houston State University (TX) and the University of Texas, she claims that her participation in the Society of Physics Students, where she served as a Zone Councilor (1972), and selection into Sigma Pi Sigma sealed her commitment to the physics community. Her professional honors include a Distinguished Service Citation from AAPT and Outstanding Teaching Awards from NC State University and the University of Memphis (formerly Memphis State University). Scholarly efforts include developing a Preparing the Professoriate program for graduate students campus-wide and initiating a physics education research graduate program in the physics department at NC State University. In-service teacher education programs, such as her funded project “Teaching Physics Teachers with Technology,” express her belief that with excellent teachers and high quality classroom tools all students can become investigators of nature. Her most recent activities include service as a Program Officer in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation and the formation of a discipline-based assessment, evaluation and research company, the Momentum Group, Fort Worth, TX.
