Dr. David Donnelly was born on March 5, 1961 in San Jose, California. He received a B.A. in Physics in 1984 from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. in Physics in 1990 from the University of California at Santa Barbara. The title of his thesis was "Impurity Associated Magnetic Modes in Antiferromagnets". During his tenure as a graduate student, he was affiliated with the Quantum Institute in the Physics Department at UCSB. After graduating, he worked as a researcher at QUEST at UCSB. He met his wife Michele in May, 1990, and they were married in February, 1991. He started at Sam Houtston State University in January, 1992. In August, 1994, he and Michele had their first child, Heather. Their second child, Colin, was born on Feb. 20, 1996. In September, 200, he took a position as an associate professor in the physics department at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University - San Marcos). He was promoted to full professor in September, 2002, and took over as department chair in February, 2007.
