INTERNSHIP SELECTION

The student should explore prospective internship sites to identify and compare experiences which might be gained in the employment situation.  The potential internship sites should be discussed with the program area faculty prior to seeking an interview.  An internship agreement cannot be made with the prospective internship supervisor until the internship advisor has agreed to the type of employment situation obtained by the student.  This step should be completed the semester prior to the beginning of the internship.  Embarrassment to both the student and Texas State University-San Marcos may result if the student makes agreements regarding the internship prior to discussion at the university level.

Other selection considerations include the following:

1.  The selection of the internship is the responsibility of the student participant and should be related to the fashion merchandising program area.

2.  The student participant must confer with the internship supervisor to identify an appropriate internship experience.

3.  Students must have an approved internship site set up by the first day of class.

4.  The internship supervisor has direct responsibility for approval of the internship.  See Internship Proposal Assignment.

5.  Supervision and evaluation of the internship experience is the responsibility of the internship supervisor.

6.  There must be an on-site supervisor for the internship position.

7.  The supervisor may not be a family member and the company cannot be owned and operated by anyone in the family.

8.  Internship sites should be with companies and individuals that have a successful track record.  New positions in new companies will generally not be considered acceptable.  Likewise, the supervisor must have been in their role in the company at least one year prior to accepting the responsibility of an intern.

9.  Only one student may intern at a particular location of a company during a given semester.

10.  The position must offer new responsibilities.  Internship sites where you have already worked for an extended period of time will not be approved unless a concerted effort is made to find the intern a new position with new responsibilities.  Students are encouraged to look for internships with different companies.

11.  Internship positions must allow for growth and must provide a background of the full range of company endeavors.

12.  Positions must be relevant to the student's future goals.
