Q2   When is internships offered?

For students majoring in Fashion Merchandising, internship is offered in Summer and Fall only.

Q3   When should students look for their internships?

The best time to look for an internship varies depending on the type of internship that the students desires.  Some students who want very special experiences with particular companies in particular locations may look for their positions a year or more in advance.  Most students will line up good internships three to six  months in advance.  In some exceptional cases, students may find acceptable internships almost immediately before the internship class starts.

Q4   Where will students find internships?

Students are allowed to complete their internship requirements anywhere an acceptable site is available.  Therefore, students may look outside of the San Marcos area and even outside of the state.  Some companies come to campus specifically to interview for interns and Career Services sponsors an Internship Fair in the Spring semester.  However, most internship sites are acquired through personal contact, word of mouth, and directly approaching the company where an internship is desired.  Some companies offer formal internships; others merely offer full or part time jobs.  Although formal internships are generally preferred, internship class requirements can usually be met through full or part time jobs.

Q5   How many students may intern at a given site?

Only one student is allowed to complete their internship at a particular location during a given academic session. If the company has operations at multiple locations one student may intern at each location. The intent is to allow students to have the opportunity to learn, work and highlight their talent with out being in the shadow of fellow classmates. To secure an internship at a particular site, the student must complete the internship proposal and have it officially approved by their instructor.

Q6 Will the intern get paid?

Most interns will receive monetary compensation for their work.  In some cases, because of the nature of the work, the student may not be paid.  Situations such as these should be discussed with the internship advisor prior to accepting the internship as special means of documenting hours will be required.

Q7   What  is required for the internship class?

Students must complete and document 150 hours of work at their internship site within the time frame designated in the syllabus for that semester.  Students will also be required to complete an internship proposal, weekly reports, a personal interview, and a final report.  The supervisor of the intern will be required to submit an evaluation of the intern.

Q8   Can I earn credit for more than one internship?

Yes, students may repeat FM 4301 for an addition three hours of upper level, writing intensive credit.  The credit can be applied toward the requirement of an upper level FCS elective or a general elective in the fashion merchandising degree outline.  If enrolling in a second internship, students will be required to fulfill all of the criteria for the first internship plus they will be required to earn their hours at a different internship site.  To enroll in a second internship, student must confer with the course instructor.
