Teaching History Through Theater
Frederick Douglass: Reflections on a Struggle for Freedom was produced for the Texas State University community and junior and senior high school public school students in the Hays County area. The one-man show was a two act dramatization of the life of Frederick Douglass with Cyrus Cassells, a poet, actor, and associate professor in the Department of English, playing the title role. Directed by Dr. Sandra Mayo, Director of Multicultural and Gender Studies and Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre, the production toured local high schools as part of a Teaching American History Grant awarded to the Department of History at Texas State, Hays Consolidated Independent School District and the San Marcos Independent School District.
