Overview :

In this lesson the students are introduced to the essential question: Did Texans have the right to fight for the land they were on? Through an experiential exercise, students have their recess taken away; allowing them to empathize with the Texan colonists who felt the land was rightfully theirs.

Identify the Louisiana Purchase

Explain the importance of Stephen F. Austin to the founding of Texas

Analyze the effects of the empresario system

Experiential Exercise

 

  • Tell the students that they will not have recess anymore. Explain that you are losing instructional time,and the principal has decided that since fourth grade has 3 TAKS tests to study for they can’t have recess anymore.
  • Have students discuss their opinions and feelings in small groups. A representative from each group will share with the class.
  • After a class discussion, explain that they will discover how this discussion relates to Texas history.
  • Introduce the essential question, “Did Texans have the right to fight for the land they were living on?”
  • Read pp. 123-126.
  • Discuss key concepts and lesson objectives as a class.
