01. POLICY
STATEMENTS
01.01 We at Texas State are committed to maintaining high quality standards and consistency in the use of the official University logo and other insignia.
01.02 Logo use
guidelines stated here govern consistency of presentation of the University's
name and symbol when they appear in printed form on publications, stationery,
websites, and other positions of University identification. For more
information on official University stationery consult UPPS No.
01.04.12.
02. LOGO USE PROCEDURES
02.01 The University's logo is its official emblem. The logo must appear on all Texas State printed materials that are to be distributed off-campus, as well as on the University homepage and all University top-level websites.
a. University-approved centers, institutes, divisions and offices must use the University’s logo.
b. The Round Rock Higher Education Center must use the University’s logo.
02.02 The following items are exempt from guidelines
in this policy statement:
a. Business or
informational forms designed for internal University use.
b. Materials prepared exclusively for special gift solicitations funded from non-university sources.
c. Materials prepared for Athletics.
d. Materials prepared for special, self-contained, grant-funded programs not directly related to University programs. Such programs are encouraged to use the logo and follow these guidelines whenever possible.
e. Materials
prepared for private support organizations of the University (as defined by
Regents Rules, Chapter IX).
f. Materials
prepared for consortia in which Texas State participates.
g. Instructional materials prepared for classroom use on- or off-campus.
h. Promotional signs and posters destined for on-campus distribution
only.
i. Other occasions may arise when departure from the specifications set forth below may be necessary or desirable. To receive approval for variations, follow the procedure outlined in Section 02.03.
02.03 Procedures for seeking approval for departure
from the logo guidelines:
a. The person making the request must present the proposed deviation in writing to the Director of Media Relations and Publications (MRP), who has the initial authority to approve or disapprove.
b. Should the Director disapprove the requested change, further appeals should be directed to the vice president to whom the applicant reports. The vice president will then review the requested deviation with the President, who will make the final decision.
03. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT PROCEDURES
03.01 In addition to the logo and accompanying type and the system statement, the short equal opportunity statement (" Texas State University-San Marcos is an equal opportunity educational institution") must appear on all printed materials to be used for recruitment purposes. The full equal opportunity statement (“No person shall be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any program or activity sponsored or conducted by Texas State University-San Marcos on any basis prohibited by applicable law, including, but not limited to, race, color, age, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or disability.”) should be used in catalogs and legal publications.
04.
SYSTEM STATEMENT USE PROCEDURES
04.01 The system statement declares Texas State’s
affiliation with the Texas State University System. The statement must appear
on all Texas State printed materials excluding envelopes that are distributed
off-campus, as well as on the University’s homepage.
a. A general guideline is to use the system statement if the logo is
used. The statement does not have to appear next to the logo; it may be
included on a separate line or within text.
b. Depending on where the statement is used, it may read “A member of
the Texas State University System” (if alongside the logo), “Texas State is a
member of the Texas State University System” or “Texas State University-San
Marcos is a member of the Texas State University System.”
04.02 Procedures for seeking approval for departure
from the system statement guidelines are the same as in Section 02.03.
05. PROCEDURES FOR APPLICATIONS OF THE LOGO
05.01 The official University logo, art and type included, must be used in its approved form without change or alteration.
05.02 Four
different logo options are recognized as standard and are adaptable to most
cases.
a. The primary
logo, consisting of the circle graphic of the Old Main tower and logotype in
Garamond font, “Texas State University” in capitals and lower case and “SAN
MARCOS” in capitals beside it after a vertical line.
b. The
secondary logo, consisting of the circle graphic of the Old Main tower with
“Texas State University” beside it and “SAN MARCOS” in capitals under the Texas
State University.
c. The
tertiary logo, consisting of the circle graphic of the Old Main tower, “Texas
State University” and “SAN MARCOS” all centered.
d. The
alternate vertical logo, consisting of the circle logo of the Old Main tower with
“TEXAS,” “STATE,” “UNIVERSITY,” and “SAN MARCOS,” all in capitals, stacked and
justified below it.
e. Occasionally
if space or technology will not accommodate the entire logo, the logotype
(words only) may be used without the circle graphic of the Old Main tower. For
approval to use the logotype only, contact the Director of MRP. The graphic
should never be used alone or with alternative fonts.
f. Logos may
be used in two colors (black and maroon PMS 505), all black or all maroon. They
may be reversed out in all white from a colored background.
g. Although
the system statement is not a part of the official University logo, it may be
used with the logo for convenience if enough space can be allotted so that the
type is readable.
05.03 The logo art and type can be reduced and enlarged as a unit but should always maintain the originally intended proportions and alignment of elements as shown in the exhibits.
05.04 Any
variation of the copyrighted logo itself is strictly prohibited by law.
05.05 Use of a secondary symbol with the logo should be avoided. Use of the University logo with a secondary symbol requires full administrative approval, beginning with the Director of Media Relations and Publications.
05.06 The logo in the exhibits attached to this UPPS is the official University logo. Other marketing symbols (such as the popular Texas State with a star in the middle) or athletic logos should not be substituted for the official logo. Guidelines for use of these symbols are on the website http://umktg.txstate.edu/logos.html.
05.07 The official logo and other graphics materials may be examined in the office of the Director of Media Relations and Publications, the custodian of the official University logo.
06. PROCEDURES FOR USE OF THE LOGO BY REGISTERED STUDENT
ORGANIZATIONS
06.01 Registered student organizations may use the University logo on approved printed materials if the following prerequisites are met:
a. A formal request to use the logo must be approved in writing by the Director of MRP.
b. When usage is in question, the Director will forward the request through approval channels, which may include the Dean of Students.
c. All student organization logo users will follow the same precise usage guidelines stated in this UPPS, including addition of the system statement.
06.02 Abuse of logo guidelines by a student organization may result in logo use permission suspension.
07. PROCEDURES FOR USE OF THE LOGO BY
NON-UNIVERSITY ENTITIES
07.01 The Texas State logo has been registered with state and federal agencies as an official servicemark and is therefore subject to copyright laws.
07.02 Use of the copyrighted logo without University approval may result in legal action against the offending entities or individuals.
07.03 Authorization to use the Texas State logo may be obtained by the following procedures:
a. For non-commercial use, requests may be submitted in writing to Media Relations and Publications.
b. The request will be forwarded through approval channels by the Director, MRP, as appropriate.
c. Businesses
and individuals desiring to use the logo for commercial purposes should consult
the office of the Director of Athletics. (See UPPS No. 01.04.10).
07.04 For additional information regarding the use of the logo, agencies should contact the Director of MRP.
08. PROCEDURES FOR ACQUIRING
COPIES OF THE LOGO
08.01 Copies of the logo, suitable for reproduction, may be downloaded from this UPPS or from http://umktg.txstate.edu/logos.html.
08.02 Desktop publishers should be cautious in reproducing computer-generated logos. Users should be cautious to assure that their printer maintains a high quality reproduction and proper proportions of the art to maintain quality standards. If problems occur, contact MRP.
